if u can look past the hunting aspect, this film shows how we have bred dogs to do certain things incredibly well (how many of us have watched the pointer just randomly point at things, whether she has had any training or not! it also explains why dogs who are bred to have a job often cause problems in the home when those instincts aren't focused elsewhere . . . border collies are a good example!
but no matter what, those dogs are having a grand ol' time! and don't the pointers remind u of the dogs in the movie UP? SQUIRREL!

great window into the past. this is obviously not intended to show complete training but gives the viewer a look into the past that may have otherwise been lost.

This silent film gives viewers a good glimpse of how varying breeds of canines are schooled in the art of hunting and later employed by their human companions to retrieve downed birds shrouded in the foliage of the countryside. There are several excellent closeup shots of the dogs as they gingerly approach the birds that have been targeted by the hunters, and some brief intertitles are also included, though they don't provide very much information. An entertaining romp for those who haven't had the chance to participate in a hunting expedition with the four-legged fellows.

This silent film shows us how bird dogs are trained and hunted with. ItÂs actually a pretty interesting project and the dogs are cute and fun to watch. The first part of the film, which shows training, is more interesting than the second part, which focuses on hunting. Still, I enjoyed this film a lot more than I thought I would.

OBVIOUSLY, not for everybody, Bird Dogs shows us how these dogs are specially trained to retrieve birds blasted out of the sky. We first see various cute dogs, setters, pointers et al chained up to barrels, so we know just how prized the master feels for these. Then we go into training, how young dogs are shown how to point (hint: a lot of leash yanking) and how to retrieve. This is probably the hardest scene to watch, as a too-cute puppy's jaws is forced open to bite on a hollow tube. Awwwwwww! Soon, the dogs are trained, and we are shown somewhat blah scenes of the dogs in action. It's not much, the dogs run around, point, and BLAM! One bird less in this world...

For its time, this is an excellent film showing superb dogs!
I especially like the scene from "quartering", when , after the dog and hunters pass by; two deer come from the right and pass behind them to the left.
champion, well trained dogs!
